Lisa Henderson has been selected as New Mexico State University’s new general counsel and chief legal affairs officer, the university announced this week. In this position, Henderson will serve as NMSU’s primary attorney, providing legal guidance and services. Henderson previously served as associate general counsel at Oklahoma City Community College. She began her new position at NMSU on Friday, Dec. 15.

“Lisa brings to NMSU a wealth of knowledge about the legal issues facing higher education and a track record as a highly effective public attorney,” NMSU President Jay Gogue said. “We are excited to have her on board.”

Henderson also served as general counsel for the Commissioners of the Land Office in Oklahoma City prior to her role at Oklahoma City Community College, and as deputy general counsel for the Office of Management and Enterprise Services, a state agency in Oklahoma.

“NMSU is a friendly, vibrant, and diverse institution,” Henderson said. “I am thrilled to help continue its rich educational legacy and positive impact on the lives of students, the community, and Aggies everywhere, near and far.”

Henderson earned her law degree with honors and her Master of Laws in healthcare from University of Oklahoma College of Law in Norman. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in biology from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where she graduated summa cum laude.

“I want to thank Scott Field for his outstanding service as NMSU’s interim general counsel since June,” Gogue said. Field will now return to his prior role at University General Counsel.

NMSU General Counsel provides legal advice to the Board of Regents and senior executive leadership and represents NMSU in administrative action and court proceedings. The office also supports the legal needs of the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and provides oversight to NMSU’s Office of Institutional Equity and the Athletics Compliance department.
